Personal training

T.w.v. € 9,95

Personal Training is Hot! But what is Personal Training? And what are recent developments? Personal training (PT) has been an important field within the fitness sector for several decades. Organizations such as ACE, ACSM, IDEA and IHRSA have often mentioned personal training as one of the most important fitness trends. IHRSA reports that the number of Americans who regularly make use of a personal trainer increased from 4 million to 6,5 million from 1999 to 2011, which amounts to approximately 2% of the 300 million inhabitants.
Although this growth seems significant, it is not clear which study was used to produce these numbers, what these are based on and whether or not the growth is related to an increase of the number of personal trainers.

Especially in the United States, and to a lesser extent in Europe, a considerable amount of books have been published about PT in general and the personal training business specifically. In order to keep their knowledge up-to-date, personal trainers draw on a great number of studies that are published in the field of exercising, health, training and nutrition. A large amount of scientific research containing practical implications has been published. However, significantly less is known about the business side of PT and the professional field. Questions such as “How many personal trainers are there?”, “What are characteristics of
personal trainers?” and “What profile do customers of personal trainers have?”, are only
seldom dealt with.

In this article (of the book The state of research in the global fitness industry), we provide a systematic overview of data concerning the professional field of personal training. The questions about what is known about the PT profession and what the characteristics of personal trainers and their customers, are is central in this article. Multiple questions are answered like: what are profiles of personal trainers and clients of personal trainers? Also, how can you be successful as a personal training (coach)?
